Schumacher
will forever be associated with one match, and one incident - the assault on
Patrick Battiston, that went unpunished, in the 1982 World Cup semi-final when
Germany overcame France on penalties. In total he played 76 times for the
national side, and appeared in 3 major finals - 1980 European Championship
(which West Germany won) and the 1982 and 1986 World Cup Finals, where the
Germans were runners up both times. He spent much of his club career with 1 FC
Koln, winning a Bundesliga title in 1978 and regularly challenging for honours.
In common with many keepers of this era, Schumacher rarely missed a game - in 9
seasons, between 1977 and 1986, he missed just two matches. Koln were managed
for a spell in the early 80s by legendary Dutch manager Rinus Michels, Mr Total
Football. Schumacher also played for Schalke, Turkish side Fenerbahçe (winning
a league title in his 3 years there), Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund. He
was back up keeper with Dortmund and made one league appearance in their 1996
title-winning season. Since retiring, he's coached or managed at all the German
clubs he played for, plus Bayer Leverkusen. He was sacked at half-time as Koln
manager in 1999; bizarre moments in Schumacher's career weren't confined to the
1982 incident.
