The Calculation Behind The FTE500

So, how does it all work then?

As mentioned on the previous blog, I want a statistic which awards the following:

  •       Contribution to a team’s season – the more matches played by an individual, the higher the score
  •      Featuring as part of a successful team – players are awarded for being part of a team that obtains more wins (or draws) than those teams with less
  •      Awards longevity – the longer your career the more points a player scores

The basic calculation is as follows:

Performance Points = Team Success x Player Contribution x Team's Matches

Performance Points are the basic currency of this entire blog. Performance points are calculated for each player for each season and then are totalled across their entire career in the Top 5 European leagues.

Below, I will be using the example of Roy Keane's 1998-99 season to demonstrate how the scores are calculated

First of all, I will detail how I calculate Team Success.

Team Success = (No Of Team Wins + (No Of Team Draws / 2)) / (Total Number Of Team Matches In The Season)

This sounds complicated but is equivalent to the percentage of points won by a team in a 2pts for a win season*

For Roy Keane in the 1998-99 season, Manchester United played 38 matches of which they had the following record:

  • 22 wins
  • 13 draws
  • 3 losses
Using the above formula, Team Success = (22 + 6.5)/38 = 28.5/38 = 75%

The second element is Player Contribution:

Player Contribution = No Of Player Appearances In Season/No Of Team Matches In Season

Again, using Roy Keane in 1998-99 as an example, Roy Keane played in 35 matches of Manchester United's 38 matches in the FA Premier League.

Using the above formula Player Contribution = 35/38 = 92.1%

Using the calculations for Team Success and Player Contribution, we can calculate the player's performance points for the season. Roy Keane in 1998-99, would have scored:

Performance Points = Team Success Player Contribution x Team's Matches
                                   = 75% * 92.1% * 38 = 26.25 Performance Points

Simply add up the performance points across an entire player's career for each season and you will get a total score for the career performance. It is this that I've used to rank a player in the FTE 500.

Note that some leagues have played more or less than 38 matches in a season throughout history (for instance Serie A teams in 1980-81 played 30 matches in the season, League Division 1 teams in 1985-86 played 42 matches in the season). To enable comparisons between seasons, I've factored performance points up or down so that they correspond to a 38 match season.

Data has been calculated for the following seasons:

Serie A - 1929-30 to 2023-24
La Liga - 1928-29 to 2023-24
Football League Division One - 1888-89 to 1991-92
Premier League - 1992-93 to 2023-24
Ligue 1 - 1932-33 to 2023-24
Bundesliga - 1963-64 to 2023-24

*The Team Success metric could have either been based upon a 2pts for a win season or a 3 pts for a win season. I've chosen a calculation based upon a 2pts for a win season as obviously we want to be able compare seasons on a like-for-like basis and there have been more 2pts for a win seasons in history
