Bernard Lama - 286.19 Performance Pts
Born: 07/04/1963 Tours, France
Position: Goalkeeper Height: 1.83m Weight: 75kg
Having
been loaned out early in his career, Lama began to establish himself with Lille
in the mid-80s. He even scored a goal for them, a penalty in an 8-0 win against
Laval in his last appearance in 1989. Lama then became a bit nomadic, spending
a season each with Metz, Brest and Lens, before joining Paris Saint Germain in
1992. Curiously he scored another penalty in his last appearance for Lens, in a
3-2 defeat against his former Metz team-mates. He finally settled at PSG and
started to get his hands on some silverware - the Ligue Un title in 1994 and
the Cup Winners' Cup in 1996. That same year Lama played for France at Euro 96
and helped his team to the semi-finals; having overcome the Dutch in a penalty
shoot-out in the quarter-finals, they were on the wrong end of the shoot out
against the Czechs in the semis. 1997 was a less than illustrious year for
Lama. Having received a suspension for cannabis use, he was frozen out at PSG
and joined West Ham on loan. This brief spell in England helped him make the
France squad for the 1998 World Cup triumph, where he was back-up to Fabian
Barthez and didn't make a tournament appearance. The same scenario happened for
Lama in 2000 as France triumphed at the Euros. By this time, he'd made a decent
return to PSG, and played regularly for two seasons, before being side lined
again. He spent a year with Rennes before retirement and ended up with over 500
league appearances to his name, plus 44 French caps.
