Rudi Voller - 282.78 Performance Pts
Born: 13/04/1960 Hanau, Germany
Position: Forward Height: 1.80m Weight: 71kg
Perhaps
most famous for being spat at by Frank Rijkaard in the infamous 1990 World Cup 2nd
round match, there were many more memorable moments, fortunately not as
unsavoury. For starters, he played in 2 World Cup Finals - scoring in the first
one (West Germany's 3-2 defeat to Argentina in 1986), and lifting the trophy in
1990 after the Germans gained revenge by beating Argentina in the final. He won
90 caps in total, scoring an impressive 47 goals. The highlight of his club
career was Champions League success with Marseille in 1993. Having started out
at Kickers Offenbach, and following a couple of seasons with Munich 1860,
Voller joined Werder Bremen where he really started to make an impact. 5
seasons there resulted in 3 second place finishes in the Bundesliga, with
Voller providing an excellent goalscoring contribution - league top scorer with
23 goals in the 1982-83 season, for example. He joined Roma in 1987 and spent 5
years in Italy, followed by the 2-year spell with Marseille. After the
Marseille bribery scandal, he returned to the Bundesliga in 1994 with Bayer
Leverkusen; he also began his managerial career there after retiring in 1996.
He's also briefly managed another of his former clubs, Roma, as well as the
German national side from 2000-2004. Leading a not exactly vintage German team
to the 2002 World Cup final was an impressive achievement - this was of course
the same era as England's 5-1 win in Munich in 2001, when Voller was in the
German dugout watching on in disbelief.
