The Guv'nor, as he liked to be known, or 'Big Time Charlie'
as Sir Alex Ferguson once described him. Began his career at West Ham and upset
a few people by posing in a Manchester United shirt before his move to Old
Trafford had actually been completed. He enjoyed most of his success whilst at
Manchester United, winning 2 Premier League titles, and the first of his 53
England caps, before moving to Inter Milan in 1995 where he played under Roy
Hodgson. He returned to England with Liverpool in 1997, and didn't enjoy much
success there. He signed for Middlesbrough after 2 seasons at Anfield, before
joining Wolves (then in the second tier) in 2002. Regarded as a tenacious
rather than skilful midfielder, his performance in England's 0-0 draw in Italy
to secure qualification for the World Cup (France 98) is fondly remembered -
the bandaged head and bloodied shirt an indication of his bravery and
commitment. Since retiring he has been a manager, mainly in the lower
divisions, whilst also following the career of his son, Tom. He also holds the
distinction of being England's first black captain (in 1993), and the first
black Premier League manager (when he was appointed at Blackburn in 2008).
