Alan Hansen - 281.86 Performance Pts
Born: 13/06/1955 Sauchie, Scotland
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.84m Weight: 83kg
Hansen enjoyed 2 successful careers - as a player during a
period of great success at Liverpool, and as a pundit, mainly on Match of the
Day. Signing from Partick Thistle in 1977, Hansen won loads of trophies at
Liverpool, many of them as captain, including the FA Cup in 1986 (to clinch The
Double), and the League title in 1990 (Hansen's eighth Championship medal). He
won 26 caps for Scotland and was bizarrely left out of the 1986 World Cup
squad, despite his success at club level that season. Renowned as a stylish
defender, comfortable on the ball and capable of starting attacks. He was
well-qualified to criticise defending during his punditry career and relished
the opportunity to do so. The famous line 'You'll never win anything with
kids', uttered after Manchester United's shambolic opening day defeat to Aston
Villa in 1995, came back to haunt him as United won the Double at the end of
that same season. His punditry and analysis were well-regarded, however, and he
was acclaimed for his insight before retiring from this second career in 2014.
Before starting out at Partick, Hansen was considering a career as a golfer,
and this is still one of his passions.
