Having spent 8 seasons with Real Betis, Gordillo joined Real Madrid for the start of the 1985-86 season. This was the ideal time to join them - Gordillo helped Real to win La Liga in his first season, and they went on to win 5 titles in succession. They also won the UEFA Cup that first season, with Gordillo scoring in the 5-1 victory in the first leg of the final against 1 FC Koln. He had a 10-year international career, winning 75 caps, and represented Spain in 2 World Cups (1982 and 1986). He returned to his first club, and his first love, in 1992; by this time Betis were in the 2nd tier, and he helped them to promotion in 1994. He's also been involved with various ambassadorial roles with Betis since retirement, including a spell as club president.
