Diego Godin - 281.33 Performance Pts
Born: 16/02/1986 Rosario, Uruguay
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.87m Weight: 73kg
Prior to
his 2019 move to Inter, central defender Godin had been a presence in La Liga
for over a decade. His career began in his native Uruguay, and his first
Spanish port of call was Villarreal, arriving in 2007. Villarreal achieved a
2nd place finish - the best in the club's history - in his first season in
Spain. His reputation has been built mainly on his Atletico Madrid career,
however. He joined the Rojiblancos in 2010 and went on to achieve domestic and
European success. 2014 saw Atletico crowned La Liga champions, with Godin's
equaliser in the final match of the season, against nearest challengers
Barcelona, clinching their first title for 18 years. Godin's early goal in the
Champions League final that same year meant they were on course for an historic
double. The Real Madrid comeback, which resulted in a 4-1 extra-time defeat for
Atletico, put paid to that; the same opponents came out on top (on penalties)
when the 2 sides met in the 2016 Champions League final. European trophy
success did arrive during Godin's time with Atletico, in the shape of Europa
League success in 2012 and 2018. His final tally of international caps was
161, which is a Uruguayan national record, and he appeared in 3 World Cups,
including 2010, where Uruguay secured a 3rd place finish. His goal against
Italy in the 2014 tournament, shortly after the Suarez/Chiellini biting
incident, sent his country through to the knockout stages at the expense of the
Italians. Godin spent 3 years in Italy, first with Inter where he reached the Europa
League final and then with Cagliari. He’s now back in Uruguay, playing for an
amateur side, Porongos.
