Dieter Burdenski - 280.68 Performance Pts
Born: 26/11/1950 Bremen, Germany Died: 09/10/2024 Bremen, Germany
Position: Goalkeeper Height: 1.81m Weight: 74kg
Although
he was most closely associated with Werder Bremen, appearing in goal almost 500
times for them over a 15-year period, the start of Burdenski's career was
certainly noteworthy and controversial. He started with Schalke and played in
their 1-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld in 1971, which came under scrutiny for
match-fixing - although he wasn't personally implicated. He decided to move on
from Schalke, but his choice of club was bizarre - scandal-hit Arminia
Bielefeld. They were relegated in 1972 on the back of the match-fixing
controversy, and their record that season, where Burdenski had been
first-choice keeper, was expunged. His 1973 move to Werder Bremen provided him
with stability, and eventually, success. They achieved 3 runners-up Bundesliga
finishes in the 1980s, missing out on the title on goal difference on 2
occasions - 1983 and 1986. A title finally arrived in 1988, Burdenski's final
Bundesliga season; by this time, Oliver Reck was established as first choice
and Burdenski only played 3 league matches that season. The presence of Sepp Maier, then Toni Schumacher, meant that
international caps were hard to come by during his career, but he still managed
to pick up 12 caps for West Germany. Burdenski's son Fabien is also a
footballer, as was his father, Herbert. His father was also a coach, and oversaw
Werder Bremen, with Dieter in goal, for most of the 1975-76 season.
