The 1984 European Championships were undoubtedly Platini's finest hour - 9 goals in the tournament, including 2 hat-tricks, scoring in every game as he led his nation to victory. Platini has taken on a variety of roles within the game. An iconic, talented, talismanic figure as a goalscoring midfielder for France; manager of the national side (1988 to 1992), and more recently, as a FIFA administrator tarnished with scandal (like so many of them have been recently). His playing career began in 1973 with Nancy, and he spent 7 years there - this included relegation in 1974, followed by an immediate return to Ligue Un the next season. He spent 3 years with Saint Etienne, who were a major force in France at the time, and he picked up a league title in 1981. He joined Juventus in 1982, linking up with several iconic players from the era - Tardelli, Boniek and Rossi for example. Serie A titles were secured in 1984 and 1986, plus the 1985 European Cup (in the wake of the Heysel disaster), which was sealed with a Platini penalty. He retired in June 1987, aged just 32. His time as French manager wasn't a great success - failure to qualify for Italia 90 was followed by an early exit at the 1992 European Championships, despite their excellent form in the run up to the tournament. Platini was involved in the organisation of the 1998 World Cup in France and became President of UEFA in 2007. He had at one stage intended to run for FIFA president, but since October 2015 has been suspended from football activity for a breach of ethics.
