Boninsegna is responsible for a minor footnote in football history. The Brazil side of 1970 that won the World Cup in Mexico that year are regarded by many as the greatest international side of all-time, and the 4-1 victory in the final against Italy is cited as the classic example of their brilliance. The one Italian goal was scored by Boninsegna, to equalise Pele's opener. He played for lesser-known Italian club sides early in his career - Prato, Potenza and Varese - before coming to prominence, and winning international recognition, after joining Cagliari in 1966. A runners-up finish was achieved in 1969, his final season with the Sardinians, and he repeated the feat the following year with his new club, Inter. He got his hands on the Scudetto with Inter the year after (1971) and spent 7 years with the Nerazzurri. He joined Juventus in 1976 and picked up 2 more Serie A titles, before seeing out his career in Serie B with Verona.
