Oriali was an early prototype of the defensive midfielder which would become popular in the 21st century. He had a strong capability for breaking up opposition attacks and supporting his more technically gifted team-mates. His finest hour came in 1982, as part of the Italian World Cup winning side. He spent the majority of his club career with Inter; they were Serie A champions in 1970-71, the season Oriali made his debut. He made a more significant contribution the next time they lifted the title, in 1980, with 6 goals - not bad for a defensive midfielder. He left Inter in 1983 and played for 4 more years with Fiorentina, his only other club. Since retirement he has mainly been employed as technical director back at Inter and returned for a second spell in this capacity in 2019.
