Kennedy was released as a youth player from Port Vale in
1967, who at the time were managed by Stanley Matthews. He put this
disappointment behind him, and achieved great success, initially at Arsenal. He
formed a great striking partnership with John Radford and scored 19 goals in
their Double winning season of 1970-71. This included the winning goal at White
Hart Lane to secure the League title. Liverpool signed him in 1974, and he won
5 League titles during his time there. By this time, he had been converted to a
midfielder, but still chipped in with regular goals, including the Match of the
Day Goal of the Season for his goal against Derby in 1979. He departed for
Swansea in 1982, to play for former team-mate John Toshack. He struggled since
retirement, having been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984, and had to
sell his medals to help with the financial implications of his illness. Kennedy
died of the illness in 2021.
