Meredith played League football from 1892 to 1924. Yes, you read that right. After debuting in 1892 for Northwich Victoria, he came to prominence when he joined Manchester City in 1894. City yo-yoed between the top 2 Divisions for the next decade, but did win the FA Cup in 1904. He achieved greater success after joining Manchester United in 1906, including 2 League titles and another FA Cup triumph. He was signed for United whilst serving a one-year ban following a bribery scandal, in which City were also heavily fined. Almost 700 league appearances indicate his longevity and helps cement his status as one of the stars of football's early years. He returned to Manchester City in 1921 and played his last game in 1924 aged 49. He won 48 caps for Wales, the last as a 45-year-old in 1920 as he helped Wales win the Home Championships. Even Stanley Matthews was a mere 42 when he won his last England cap. He also helped set up the Players' Union in 1907 (a forerunner to the PFA).
