Every top-level team of the late 60s / early 70s had a 'hard
man', and Smith was Liverpool's. 16 years at Anfield yielded 4 League titles,
but only 1 England cap. He left Liverpool in 1978 to play in the North American
Soccer League, returning to join John Toshack's Swansea. Many Liverpool fans of
a certain age rank Smith's goal in the European Cup Final of 1977 (the second
goal in a 3-1 win) as their favourite moment, and, as a fully committed, home
grown player, he was popular with the Anfield faithful. Less favourable were
his racist attitudes, caught on tape by the author Dave Hill when researching
