Overath is
the answer to an excellent pub quiz question. Apart from Franz Beckenbauer, who
was the only German player to start both the 1966 and 1974 World Cup Final
matches? Wolfgang is our man, and the 1974 triumph was the last of his 81
international appearances. His club career was spent entirely with 1.FC Koln,
making over 500 appearances during a 15-year career. He was a part of German
football history in another sense as well, being part of the Koln side that won
the first ever Bundesliga in 1964. This proved to be his only league title.
Overath was an attacking midfielder who regularly chipped in with goals. He
retired from playing in 1977 and returned to Koln in 2004 as Club President, a
role he held for 7 years.
