Saint-Etienne were the most successful club side in France during the 70s, winning 3 successive titles (1974-76), and reaching the 1976 European Cup Final - the 3rd of Bayern Munich's victims in their hat-trick of successes in the competition. Lopez was a key player for 'Les Verts' during this era, and they also picked up another title in 1981. They've yet to win it since. 1982 was a memorable year for Lopez. He was part of the famous French side that performed so well at the World Cup (and came on as sub for Patrick Battiston after Harald Schumacher's infamous challenge in the semi-final against West Germany). He moved to Toulouse that year as well, after 11 years with Saint-Etienne. After 3 years there he spent a season with Montpellier at the end of his career.
