Santi Cazorla - 272.41 Performance Pts
Born: 13/12/1984 Llanera, Spain
Position: Midfielder Height: 1.68m Weight: 66kg
A
diminutive, skilful midfielder for Arsenal, Cazorla was a popular figure in
North London. When Arsenal reached the FA Cup Final in 2014, fans were
convinced that they would end their 9-year trophy drought against underdogs,
Hull City. When the Gunners found themselves 2-0 down after ten minutes, major
doubts were setting in. Cazorla's stunner from a free-kick a few minutes later
gave them hope, and Arsenal went on to triumph 3-2 after extra time. He also
starred in the 4-0 victory over Aston Villa the following year as Arsenal
retained the trophy. Prior to his arrival in England in 2012, he spent 9 years
in La Liga, mainly with Villarreal, but also appearing for Recreativo de Huelva
and Malaga. Villarreal were enjoying the most successful period in their
history around this time, culminating in a runners-up finish in 2008 - their
highest ever league placing. They also reached the 2006 Champions League
semi-finals, ironically being eliminated by Arsenal, although Cazorla didn't
appear in either match against his future employers. His later years at Arsenal
were blighted by injury, and there were question marks about whether he may be
forced into premature retirement, having to undergo numerous operations.
Although his Arsenal career ended in 2018, he was able to continue playing and
returned to Villarreal. Injuries also interrupted his international career,
forcing him to miss the 2010 World Cup. He did feature in Spain's 2 other
triumphs during this period - Euro 2008 (coming on as sub in the final) and
Euro 2012 (appearing at the group stage). He won 81 caps in total. Following a
period with Qatari side Al Sadd, Cazorla has returned to play for his first
club, Real Oviedo.
