Fabien Barthez - 271.74 Performance Pts
Born: 28/06/1971 Lavelanet, France
Position: Goalkeeper Height: 1.80m Weight: 76kg
Barthez's
forehead was on the receiving end of pre-match kisses from French team-mate
Lauren Blanc during his career, most memorably at France '98, when the host
nation were World Cup winners. His 87 caps also included appearances at Euro
2000, where France were champions, and at the 2006 World Cup - his appearance
in the final against Italy was his last for his country. He started out at
Toulouse, before joining Marseille in 1992 and winning the Champions League the
following year. Barthez stayed with them after their enforced relegation
following the bribery scandal, before moving on to Monaco in 1995. 2 Ligue Un
titles were secured there, which brought him to the attention of Manchester
United. He spent 3 eventful seasons in England, including 2 Premier League
title-winning campaigns (2001 and 2003). His eccentricity was often evident,
including trying to unsuccessfully kid Paolo Di Canio that he was offside
during an FA Cup tie against West Ham in 2001. He returned to Marseille in
2003. His final season as a professional (2006-07, with Nantes) ended
ignominiously; he had an altercation with a fan, and his contract was
terminated, as Nantes suffered relegation. Since retirement he has pursued a
career in Motorsport.
