Methven played out his entire English league career as a full-back with Derby
County, making over 450 appearances between 1891 and 1906. He later went on to
manage The Rams. They were the 'nearly men' during Methven's era - runners-up
in the League in 1896, third place in 1894 and 1897, and 3 times FA Cup runners
up - including the 6-0 thrashing against Bury in 1903. Methven went his
entire career without ever recording a goal.
