Supremely talented, incredibly committed, and capable of
scoring wonderful goals, yet also responsible for some heinous acts. Otman
Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, and Italian centre half
Georgio Chiellini can all bear witness to this, having had chunks of their
flesh removed courtesy of Suarez’s gnashers. Another unsavoury incident
occurred when Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra during a
Liverpool -Manchester United clash in 2011. Evra eventually received an
apology, from the club rather than the individual. Against this backdrop of controversy,
Suarez was capable of great football. For example, 4 spectacular goals against
Norwich in December 2013; Suarez also won the Golden Boot that season, as
Liverpool finished runners up in Suarez’s final season with the club. He's Uruguay’s
all-time top scorer and was still adding to that tally during the 2024 Copa
America as his nation finished 3rd, shortly before his international
retirement. He was part of the much-heralded, iconic MSN front three at
Barcelona alongside Messi and Neymar, winning 4 La Liga titles and the 2015
Champions League whilst at Camp Nou. He made his name in the Eredivisie with
Ajax, was also a title winner in 2021 with Atletico Madrid, and is currently
reunited with Messi at Inter Miami. A stellar career with many highlights. Suarez
was also famous for a goal line handball to deny Ghana a potentially winning
goal against Uruguay in 2010, which would have sent an African nation into a
World Cup semi-final for the first time. Good and bad in Suarez, that’s for
sure.
