Migueli
was at the heart of the Barcelona defence throughout much of the 1970s and 80s.
Having started out in the 2nd tier with Cadiz, he made 391 appearances in La
Liga for Barca; the first of these was against Zaragoza in November 1973, his
only appearance of the season as Barcelona won the title. He and they would not
have expected to wait so long to become champions again, but they did, when the
side led by Terry Venables finally reached the summit in 1985. They'd finished
in the runners-up spot 4 times in the intervening years, missing out by a
single point in 1977. Some consolation arrived in the shape of Cup Winners' Cup
triumphs in 1979 and 1982. Barca missed out on the big one though - after the
1985 La Liga success, they reached the 1986 European Cup Final only to lose on
penalties to Steaua Bucharest. Migueli played in all 3 of these European
finals; this included carrying on playing with a broken collarbone in the 1979
final victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf, which went to extra-time. He retired in
1988, picking up another trophy - the Copa del Rey - in his final season.
