Saint
Etienne, with only one previous Ligue Un title to their name (in 1957), took
French football by storm in the 60s and 70s, winning 8 more league titles.
Goalkeeper Bernard was present for the first 2 of these, in 1964 and 1967.
Although he represented 4 other Ligue Un sides - Bordeaux, Sedan, Nimes and Red
Star, these proved to be the only league titles of his 17-year career. He came
close with his first club, Bordeaux, with a couple of 3rd place finishes early
in his career and reached the same level with Nimes in 1962. The title race
that year was really close, with Nimes finishing just a point behind Reims and
Racing Club Paris. 2 defeats in their last 3 games, including a bizarre 8-3
loss to Angers with Bernard in goal, cost them dear that year. He'd suffered
disappointment of a different kind 6 years earlier, as Bordeaux suffered
relegation. His 4-year spell with Sedan (1957 to 1961) was a little less
eventful, although he did win the first of his 21 international caps whilst
there, making his debut for France in 1960. Following the 1967 title victory
with Saint Etienne, Bernard moved to Red Star and spent his final 2 seasons
there.
