The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan, also known as the San Siro, was named in his honour in 1980, a year after his death; he'd represented both Milan clubs during his career. It's fair to say he made an immediate impact, winning Serie A with Inter in his debut season (1930), weighing in with 31 goals (unsurprisingly the league's top scorer that year, and still a record for a debut Serie A season). Another title with Inter followed in 1938, with Meazza once again topping the league's goal charts with 20; after an injury-hit couple of years, he moved to Milan in 1940. Italian football carried on for most of the Second World War, and Meazza also turned out for Juventus, Varese and Atalanta, before a final season back at Inter prior to his 1947 retirement, this time as player-coach. His place in Italian football folklore is assured and rubber-stamped by his impact at international level. Italy were World Cup winners in 1934 (as hosts) and again in 1938, with Meazza playing a key role in both tournaments. He captained the side to victory for the second triumph, scoring a crucial penalty in the semi-final against Brazil, despite his shorts falling down as he was about to take the kick.
