Thomas Helmer - 268.62 Performance Pts
Born: 21/04/1965 Herford, Germany
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.85m Weight: 78kg
Although
he played briefly for Arminia Bielefeld, Hertha Berlin and Sunderland, Helmer
spent the bulk of his club career with 2 of the Bundesliga leading lights -
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Dortmund weren't quite in their pomp
during Helmer's time, although they were Bundesliga runners up in 1992, his
final season there; 3 titles were subsequently won during his time at Bayern.
He started his international career with Germany in 1990, just after the World
Cup triumph that year, but achieved trophy success 6 years later, playing a key
role in the Euro 96 victory. Although his final season at Bayern, in 1999,
included league title success, he missed out on 2 more trophies that year as
Bayern lost the German Cup final on penalties to Werder Bremen (although he
didn't play in the final), and, famously, the Champions League final to
Manchester United. He was sat on the subs bench that night; there was more
decisive activity on the opposition bench, as Sheringham and Solskjaer memorably
came on to great effect.
