Dimitar Berbatov - 268.37 Performance Pts
Born: 30/01/1981 Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria
Position: Forward Height: 1.88m Weight: 79kg
In his
heyday Berbatov was a joy to watch - not renowned for his work-ethic, but
stylish and creative, with an eye for goal. Blackburn Rovers will testify to
this, being on the receiving end of a 5-goal haul from Berbatov in 2010 whilst
he was playing for Manchester United. This made him the first player from overseas
to score 5 or more goals in a single English top flight match. He made his international
debut in 1999, whilst still playing in his homeland for CSKA Sofia. He transferred
to a higher-profile stage in 2001, joining Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
This was during their 'bridesmaid' era, epitomised by 3 runners-up finishes in
2002 (including the Champions League). Berbatov started to establish himself
that season and carried on contributing a decent goal-return over several year.
In 2006, he signed for Tottenham and shone at White Hart Lane. Spurs even won a
trophy during his time there - the 2008 League Cup, with Berbatov scoring a
penalty in the 2-1 final victory over Chelsea. Manchester United came calling
soon after, and Berbatov won his first career league title at Old Trafford, in
2009. He repeated the feat in 2011 - the same season as the 5-goal display
against Blackburn. A hat-trick against Liverpool that season further endeared
him to the United fans. When first-team opportunities were starting to become
more limited at United, he joined Fulham; although he was popular at Craven Cottage,
he was unable to prevent their relegation from the Premier League in 2014. He joined
Monaco during the January transfer window that year and spent a couple of seasons
there before seeing out his career with spells in Greece and India. Berbatov
won 78 caps for Bulgaria, scoring 48 goals.
