Miguel Àngel Nadal - 267.57 Performance Pts
Born: 28/07/1966 Manacor, Spain
Position: Midfielder Height: 1.87m Weight: 83kg
Two facts
immediately come to mind when thinking of Nadal. Firstly, his nephew is the
tennis legend, Rafa. Secondly, he missed a crucial penalty in the shoot-out in
the quarter-final defeat to England at Euro 96. This was one of 62 appearances
he made for Spain, and he was in the middle of a successful spell with
Barcelona at this time. He started and finished his La Liga career with
Mallorca, making his first appearance in 1987, and moving to the Camp Nou in
1991. European Cup success arrived at the end of his first season, but he was
on the bench for the 1992 final at Wembley. Nadal won La Liga 5 times with Barca
before his return to Mallorca in 1999. The island side usually struggled in the
lower reaches of La Liga, and Nadal suffered relegation in his first spell in
1988, but they achieved an impressive 3rd place finish in 2001, followed by Copa
del Rey success in 2003. Mallorca narrowly avoided relegation in his final year
as a player (2005), and he retired having made over 500 La Liga appearances. He
could then concentrate on watching his nephew smack a tennis ball around; 2005
was also the year that Rafa won his first Grand Slam title (the French
Open).
