Filippo Inzaghi - 267.50 Performance Pts
Born: 09/08/1973 Piacenza, Italy
Position: Forward Height: 1.81m Weight: 74kg
According
to Sir Alex Ferguson 'Inzaghi? He was born in an offside position'. This was a
slightly churlish reaction to Inzaghi's ability to sniff out goalscoring opportunities;
he was definitely in the 'goal-poacher' category, rather than an 'all-round
striker'. He started out with Piacenza, and, following some loan spells in the
lower divisions, stepped up to Serie A with Parma in 1995. After one season
there, he moved to Atalanta, and became Serie A top scorer in 1996-97 with 24
goals. This attracted Juventus, and he had a stellar first season in Turin.
Scudetto success in 1998 (sealed by a victory against Bologna, featuring an
Inzaghi hat-trick) was accompanied by a run to the Champions League final,
resulting in defeat to Real Madrid. Inzaghi joined Milan in 2001 and spent 11
successful seasons at the San Siro. 2 more Serie A titles came his way, and he
also appeared in 2 victorious Champions League finals, in 2003 (beating former
club Juventus on penalties) and 2007. Sir Alex will have some happy memories
regarding Inzaghi. His 2 goals for Juventus in the 1999 Champions League
semi-final ended up being in vain, as Manchester United famously came back to
win 3-2. Milan's 2007 Champions League victory came against United's main
rivals, Liverpool, with Inzaghi scoring both goals in the 2-1 win. At
international level, he scored 25 goals in 57 appearances; he played (and
scored) during Italy's successful 2006 World Cup campaign, although he didn't
play in the final. Since retirement he has been employed as a coach, including
a spell back at Milan, and is currently in charge at Pisa. His brother Simone
was also a professional, most notably with Lazio. Simone also won 3 caps for
the Azzurri, partnering his brother on his debut.
