In recent
years, Napoli have regularly featured at the top end of the Serie A table,
having had a dip in the post-Maradona era. Attacking midfielder Hamsik was a
key presence in their side, making 520 appearances (a club record) prior to his
2019 move to the Chinese league. He first appeared in Italy as a 17-year-old with
Brescia, suffering relegation in his first season in 2005. It wasn't really his
fault because he only played once that season. Napoli signed him in 2007, and
he helped them to 4 runners-up finishes, and 3 3rd place finishes, during his
time there; they also enjoyed 2 Coppa Italia successes. His nation, Slovakia,
qualified for their first World Cup in 2010; Hamsik captained the side as they
reached the last 16, knocking out Italy en route. The dressing-room atmosphere
at Napoli the following season would have been interesting and potentially
awkward, especially as one of his Napoli team-mates, Christian Maggio, was part
of the defeated Italian side at the World Cup. 120 caps and 25 goals for Slovakia
are both national records.
