Pacy and prolific, Quagliarella was still scoring in Serie A at the ripe old age of 40. His final season was no fairytale, however, as Sampdoria suffered relegation in 2023. He represented several other Italian clubs – Torino, Ascoli, Napoli, Udinese, and, most notably, Juventus, tasting Scudetto success on 3 consecutive occasions between 2012 and 2014. After that third title, he left Juve to join city rivals Torino, before returning for his second spell with Sampdoria in 2017. He was Serie A top scorer with the Genoans in 2019; during that season he equalled the record for scoring in consecutive Serie A matches (11), matching Gabriel Batistuta’s feat. He was renowned for scoring spectacular goals – a sublime backheel for Samp against one of his former clubs, Napoli, possibly the pick of the bunch. He represented the Azzurri 28 times, scoring 8 goals, including one against Slovakia at the 2010 World Cup. Despite Quagliarella’s efforts, the Italians, defending champions, suffered an ignominious group stage exit.
