Joaquín - 266.44 Performance Pts
Born: 09/06/1956 Oviedo, Spain
Position: Midfielder Height: 1.83m Weight: 72kg
Not to be confused
with the more recent Joaquin (the Real Betis version, who played for Spain in the
00s), this earlier version also represented his country, including at their home
World Cup finals in 1982. He had a bench side view as Northern Ireland shocked
the hosts, with their famous 1-0 win in Valencia, and also for the 0-0 draw
with England which saw both teams eliminated. He remained loyal to Sporting
Gijon throughout his club career, making over 500 league appearances over a
15-year period. Gijon have never been considered one of the more successful,
higher profile Spanish club sides, and it would be worth a lot of I-Spy points
to spot a replica shirt anywhere outside the Asturias region, but they did
achieve 5 top 5 finishes in La Liga during Joaquin's time. This included a
runners-up place in 1979, their highest-ever finish.
