Irwin began his career at Leeds, but it was whilst he was at
Oldham that his career took off. He was part of the Latics side that reached
the League Cup final, and FA Cup semi-final (against United) in 1990 before
joining the Red Devils that summer. He won the first of his 56 caps for the
Republic of Ireland shortly after his move. Two-footed, comfortable in either
full-back position, and an expert free-kick taker; he was a key part of a
trophy-laden period of United's history and won 7 titles during his time at Old
Trafford. Irwin controversially missed the 1999 FA Cup Final after receiving a
second yellow card in a league match at Anfield. He retired in 2004 aged 38,
after a couple of seasons at Wolves.
