Rummenigge was a talismanic presence for West Germany during the 70s and 80s as they regularly challenged for trophies on the international stage. He scored 45 times for the national side, often scoring at crucial moments, for example to help the Germans come back from 3-1 down in the iconic semi-final against France at the 1982 World Cup, and in the World Cup final against Argentina, which ended in a 3-2 defeat, 4 years later. Rummenigge was also part of the side that triumphed at the 1980 European Championships. At club level he was most closely associated with Bayern and broke through into the first-team during their period of European Cup success, playing in their 3rd consecutive final victory against Saint Etienne in 1976. Rummenigge won 2 Bundesliga titles with Bayern, in 1980 (which turned out to be a hugely successful year for him, with the subsequent triumph at the European Championships) and 1981; he was league top scorer in both seasons. He repeated the top-scoring feat in 1984, his final season with Bayern, before spending 3 years in Italy with Inter. After a couple of seasons in Switzerland with Servette, he retired in 1989. He's been involved with Bayern in various capacities since retirement and is currently club chairman. Rummenigge's brother Michael was also a successful player, although somewhat in his shadow. Michael played alongside Karl-Heinz for Bayern, before Karl-Heinz moved to Italy, and Michael won the Bundesliga with Bayern in 3 successive seasons (1985-1987). He also played for Borussia Dortmund. Michael only won 2 caps for West Germany; the first was as a substitute in a 5-1 victory against Turkey, by which time Karl-Heinz had already scored twice!!
