Belgian born but German raised, Wimmer was a stalwart for
Borussia Monchengladbach (his only professional club) for over a decade,
winning 5 Bundesliga titles. He also featured in the 1977 European Cup Final,
an occasion that brings back fond memories for Liverpool fans – the Reds
overcoming their German opponents 3-1. Wimmer’s consistent displays earned him
international recognition, collecting 36 caps. This included 2 appearances in
the 1974 World Cup finals, although not the final itself, as the host nation
lifted the trophy. Primarily a defensive midfielder, Wimmer still had an eye
for goal; he grabbed the second goal in the 1972 European Championship final as
the Germans overcame the USSR 3-0.
