Burgsmuller
gives hope to all players of a certain age. He signed for Werder Bremen in
1985, aged 35, and enjoyed the most successful period of his career there. In Burgsmuller's first season there, Bremen were pipped by Bayern on goal difference. The two sides had drawn 0-0 in the penultimate round
of matches, and a Burgsmuller goal failed to prevent a 2-1 defeat for Bremen
against Stuttgart on the final day of the season. This handed the title to the Bavarians, at Bremen's expense, for the second consecutive season. 2 years later, however, Bremen were crowned champions -
their first Bundesliga title since 1965. Burgsmuller netted 6 times during that
title-winning season. Bremen also reached successive German Cup finals the
following 2 years; in his last game as a professional, he came off the bench
aged 40 to score for Bremen in the 1990 final but couldn't prevent a 3-2 defeat
to Kaiserslautern. This was all a far cry from the years immediately prior to
his move to Werder Bremen. Relegation with Nurnberg in 1984 was followed by a
season with Rot-Weiss Oberhausen in the 2nd tier. He'd started out with
Rot-Weiss Essen, his hometown team, and had 2 spells with them, plus 2 spells
with Uerdingen, before moving to Dortmund in 1976. He then
established himself as one of the top goalscorers in the Bundesliga, throughout
his 7 seasons there - this included a season's best tally of 27 goals in
1980-81. He also gained international recognition, winning 3 caps whilst at
Dortmund. He didn't opt for his pipe and slippers once his football career was
over. He took up American football and played in the NFL Europe competition
from 1996 to 2002 and was 52 when his American Football career ended.
