Juventus's
winning lots of titles in a row isn't a new phenomenon; they also won 5
consecutive Serie A titles in the 1930s, with Varglien a mainstay of the side.
In 1936, Bologna, finally halted this run. The 1935 Scudetto was Juve’s last
until 1950, long after Varglien's retirement in 1942. Although he was part of
the Italy squad that won the 1934 World Cup, he didn't play in the tournament,
and only appeared once for the Azzurri. His brother Giovanni was another
Juventus stalwart, and a team-mate for much of Mario's career. Latterly, Mario
went into management, the highlight being the Serie B title with Como in 1949.
