David Ginola - 263.54 Performance Pts
Born: 25/01/1967 Gassin, France
Position: Winger Height: 1.85m Weight: 83kg
Good
looks, charm and charisma were very much in evidence throughout Ginola’s
career, as much as his football talent. He even did an advert for L’Oréal!! He
began his career in 1985 with Toulon, and also represented Racing Club Paris
(suffering relegation in 1990) and Brest, before his move to Paris
Saint-Germain in 1992. He was an ever-present during the PSG title-winning
season of 1993-94, contributing 13 goals. Club success was tempered with
disappointment at international level. In a crucial World Cup qualifier against
Bulgaria, Ginola's misplaced pass led to the Bulgarians scoring a late
breakaway goal, thus qualifying for USA 94 at France's expense. Ginola was
heavily criticised by French fans, the media, and by national team manager
Gerard Houllier and his international career never recovered. He joined
Newcastle in 1995; this was the Kevin Keegan era, where the cunning plan was to
attack like crazy and entertain. Ginola became an instant favourite on
Tyneside, as the Geordies finished runners-up in 2 successive seasons - 1996
and 1997. Ginola moved on soon after, signing for Tottenham. 1999 was a great
year for Ginola, winning the League Cup with Spurs, and the Footballer of the
Year award the same season. He also played for Aston Villa, and, briefly,
Everton, although he was no longer at the peak of his powers by this time. He
has dabbled in numerous activities since his 2002 retirement, including acting,
punditry and wine-making. He also considered a bid for the FIFA presidency in
2015. In 2016, he suffered a heart attack but made a full recovery.
