Archie Goodall - 263.18 Performance Pts
Born: 03/01/1865 Belfast, Northern Ireland Died: 20/11/1929 East Finchley, England
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.83m Weight: 85kg
Goodall
played for both Preston North End and Aston Villa during the inaugural season
of the Football League, in 1888-89. He joined Derby County in 1889 and formed
part of a successful side (Steve Bloomer and all that) that regularly
challenged for trophies during football's formative years. He's so old school
he even played for, and managed, Glossop, after leaving Derby in 1903. There
are a few 'firsts' and oddities about his career. His transfer from Preston to
Villa was the first ever to be approved by the Football League. He played
alongside his brother John for many years at Derby, but because they were born
in different places, they represented different countries - London-born John
winning 14 caps for England, and Belfast-born Archie winning 10 caps for
Ireland. They were the first brothers to do this - forerunners to the Boateng
brothers lining up against each other in the Ghana v
Germany games at the 2010 and 2014 World Cup. Goodall also scored for Ireland
against Wales in 1903, aged 38, becoming their oldest goalscorer.
