Francisco Janich - 263.05 Performance Pts
Born: 27/03/1937 Udine, Italy Died: 02/12/2019 Nemi, Italy
Position: Central Defender Height: 1.80m Weight: 80kg
Janich was
a long-standing servant of Bologna, appearing in almost 300 league matches; he
was ever-present in their title winning season of 1964, and also 2 years later
when they finished runners-up. His earlier career hadn't been quite so
successful. His first club, Atalanta, were relegated in 1958, and his next
club, Lazio, suffered the same fate in 1961. He joined Bologna immediately
after this, thus beginning a successful 11-year spell there. He played out a
final season (1972-73) with Lucchese in the 3rd tier. A sweeper, Janich was in
the side to prevent rather than score goals, and he never found the net during
his entire career. He also only received a single red card, during that
relegation season with Lazio, which is a decent record considering how long he
played for. His international career was short-lived, playing only 6 times for
Italy, but he did feature in 2 iconic matches for the national side that he
would probably have chosen to forget. World Cup 1962 - Chile 2 Italy 0, the
infamous 'Battle of Santiago' that got David Coleman rather worked up; World
Cup 1966 - North Korea 1 Italy 0 - probably the Azzurri's most humiliating
defeat in their history.
