Williamson
made 602 appearances (still a club record) for Middlesbrough, his only club, in
a long career that was punctuated by the First World War. He also played for
England, becoming (in 1905) the first Boro player to do so. Despite being a
goalkeeper, he even scored a couple of goals (both penalties) during his
career. Boro were pretty much a mid-table team during his time there, although
they did manage a 3rd place finish in 1914. He retired aged 38, in 1923.
