Gre-no-li
was the nickname given to the much-heralded trio of Swedish stars who played
for Milan in the 1950s. Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl, and Nils Liedholm.
Liedholm came to Milan in 1949, and made an immediate impact, weighing in with
18 goals in his first season. He did well the following season as well, with
another 13 goals, as Milan won the Scudetto. Liedholm went on to win another 3
league titles before his retirement in 1961, aged 38. Sweden had a strong side
at this time and reached the 1958 World Cup final on home soil. Liedholm scored
the opening goal in the final, before Brazil, inspired by a 17-year-old Pele,
went on to a 5-2 victory. Liedholm is also famous for a long and successful
managerial career. He eventually took charge at Milan, where he had enjoyed
such great success as a player and led them to the Scudetto in 1979 - their
first league title for 11 years. At Roma, he led them to the 1983 Serie A
title, ending an even longer drought (their last success coming in 1942). He
was in the dug-out when Roma lost on penalties to Liverpool in the 1984
European Cup final - Grobbelaar's wobbly legs and all that. He died in 2007,
aged 85, having made a huge impact on Italian football, on and off the
pitch.
