Anderson was the first black player to play for England in a full international,
appearing against Czechoslovakia at Wembley on 29th November 1978, when England
won 1-0. Since then well over 100 further BME players have represented England, underlining what an important milestone this was for the national side. This was the first of 30 England caps. Anderson played for some
successful clubs, firstly at Nottingham Forest (winning a league title and 2
European Cups) before joining Arsenal in 1984. He then represented Manchester
United, winning the FA Cup in 1990, then Sheffield Wednesday, who were
regularly challenging for trophies in the early 90s. He had a brief spell as
player-manager at Barnsley before retiring. He was nicknamed 'Spider' due to
his long, gangly physique.
