Historically,
Varese haven't been one of the leading lights of Italian football, so when they
beat Turin giants Juventus 5-0 in February 1968, people took notice. Anastasi
scored a hat-trick in that victory for the newly promoted side. Understandably
impressed, Juventus signed him soon after. They got a decent return on their
investment, with Anastasi being part of 3 title winning sides - 1972, 1973 and
1975. He also helped Juve reach the European Cup final in 1973, where they lost
to Ajax. He spent a couple of years with Inter, winning the Coppa Italia in
1978, before spending his final 3 seasons in Serie A with Ascoli. The famous
hat-trick in 1968 also led to international recognition that same year, and he
was part of the Italian side that won the European Championships as hosts,
scoring the 2nd goal in the 2-0 victory over Yugoslavia in the final replay.
This was the most famous, and crucial, of his 8 goals for the national side.
