Fran the one-club man played over 600 times for Deportivo La Coruna, and his playing career coincided with the most successful period in the club's history. He debuted in 1988 and won promotion in 1991. After surviving a relegation play-off the following year, they became much more of a force in La Liga. Successive runners-up finishes were achieved in 1994 and 1995; the title was within their grasp that first year, when a missed penalty, and subsequent draw against Valencia, handed Barcelona the championship. La Liga success finally came their way in 2000 -the first in the club's history - followed by 2 more 2nd place finishes in 2001 and 2002. 3 years later Fran called it a day, although he returned in 2008 to join Deportivo's indoor football team. He won 16 caps for Spain and featured at Euro 2000. His last cap was in the dramatic 4-3 win over Yugoslavia that enabled Spain to qualify from the group.
