Until
their modern-day successes, 1958 was the closest that France had come to
achieving World Cup glory. Kaelbel played in every game in central defence in
that tournament as France finished 3rd. At club level, Kaelbel played 250 games
for Strasbourg in 2 spells, beginning and ending his career there. In between
he played for Monaco, Le Havre and Stade de Reims, becoming a title winner with
Monaco in 1961 (the club's first in their history) but also enduring relegation
with both Le Havre in 1962 and Reims in 1964. His return to Strasbourg resulted
in French Cup success in 1966, and he finished in 1969. Never a regular
goalscorer, he did find the net once in his final season, in a satisfying 5-0
win over his former club, Monaco.
