Real Madrid was the dominant force in La Liga in the late 80s, winning 5 successive league titles from 1986 to 1990. Full-back Chendo spent his entire club career with Madrid and was first-choice during those title winning years. He overcame personal tragedy during this time, with the death of his young son in a car accident, in July 1986, not long after he'd represented Spain at the World Cup in Mexico. He won further league titles in 1995 and 1997 and was still at the club when they won the 1998 Champions League, although he wasn't a first-team regular during these later years. 1998 turned out to be his final season as a player. For Spain, he also appeared at another World Cup tournament - Italia 90 - and won 26 caps in total. He wasn't renowned for his goalscoring, netting only 3 La Liga goals in total throughout his career. One of these came in March 1995, during the title-run in, to secure a vital 1-0 win over Real Valladolid.
