In the
years immediately following the Spanish Civil War, Sevilla were one of the
country's leading sides. Having finished runners-up in 1940, they repeated the
feat in 1943 - Busto's first year as first choice keeper. 3 years later they
finished in top spot and achieved a couple more 2nd place finishes in this era,
in 1951 and 1957. Despite this consistency and longevity, he never appeared for
the national side. It might be a little over-generous to give Busto all the
credit for this great run of success, but 1946 remains Sevilla's only
title-winning year in their history; they've also never finished in the top two
since that 1957 season. He finished his career in 1958 and ended on a low
point. Sevilla's 2nd place finish in 1957 saw them enter the European Cup the
following year, with compatriots and league champions Real Madrid qualifying as
holders. The two Spanish sides met in the quarter-finals. The first-leg, at the
Bernabeu, ended in an embarrassing 8-0 defeat for Sevilla, which turned out to
be the last of Busto's 341 appearances for his only club. Curiously, Real beat
Sevilla by the same scoreline the following season in the league, but Busto had
put his gloves away by this time.
