At club level, he made over 300 appearances in 2 spells with Werder Bremen; he also played for 2 other leading sides in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, winning the title with Bayern in his only season there (2004-05). He had a spell with Toronto at the end of his career, before retiring in 2013 and returning to Werder Bremen in a coaching capacity. In more recent years he's managed in the German lower leagues.
