Juan
Arza's club career with Sevilla ran almost parallel with another long-servant,
goalkeeper Jose Maria Busto. Busto kept them out, Arza put them in - scoring a
club record 207 goals for the club. One of his most memorable strikes was the
4th and final goal in Sevilla's 4-1 victory over Celta Vigo in the 1948 Spanish
Cup final; this success, plus the 1946 La Liga title, were the only medals he
won during his career. He picked up an individual award though - the Pichichi
Trophy in 1955, with an impressive 29 goals in 29 league games. Arza's Sevilla
career ended in 1959, but he returned there as manager for various spells. He
was unable to prevent relegation when in charge in 1968; neighbours Real Betis
sank to the 2nd tier in the same season, so there was much drowning of sorrows
in the city that year.
