Born: 10/10/1953 Mulhouse, France
Position: Goalkeeper Height: 1.82m Weight: 79kg
By the
time Rust hung up his gloves in 1990, after a long and distinguished career,
he'd appeared almost 500 times in Ligue Un. He represented 2 less fashionable
sides, Sochaux and Montpellier. Sochaux had a strong side during Rust's time,
and achieved a runners-up finish in 1980. This was their highest league placing
since the 1950s, and the highest finish that Rust achieved in his career. This enabled
Sochaux to qualify for the UEFA Cup; they reached the semi-finals in 1981,
losing to AZ 67 Alkmaar. Rust moved to Montpellier in 1987 and was part of the
French Cup winning side in 1990, his final season. Team-mates in this
Montpellier side included Laurent Blanc and Eric Cantona. He's undertaken
various coaching roles since retirement, including assistant coach of the
Tunisian national side, alongside former French national team manager, Henri
Michel. Rust won a solitary cap for France, in the 3rd place play-off victory
over Belgium at the 1986 World Cup.
